Public affairs analyst, Comrade Saheed Abdullahi, has called on governments at all levels to prioritise national security, workers’ welfare and purposeful leadership as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Comrade Abdullahi made the call during SBS 96.9 FM’s Newspaper Review and Analysis programme monitored by reporter Mercy Akande. He commended President Bola Tinubu’s approval of salary increases for military personnel, describing the move as a step towards boosting the morale of security operatives in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges. He, however, advocated regular salary reviews and improved welfare packages, including housing and healthcare, for military personnel.
The analyst also urged the government to improve the welfare of workers across other sectors, noting that many Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs and reduced purchasing power. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration among all tiers of government and security agencies to effectively tackle insecurity, while appealing to citizens not to provide information, logistics or other forms of support to criminal elements.
On the 2027 elections, Abdullahi disagreed with the prediction by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, that President Bola Tinubu would secure overwhelming support from the North, arguing that electoral outcomes cannot be determined in advance. He urged opposition parties to strengthen internal unity if they intend to mount a credible challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress, while also calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a free, fair and credible election. He further advised politicians to avoid actions capable of heightening political tension and urged public office holders to place the interests of the people above personal gain.
