A public affairs analyst and legal practitioner, Mr. Olateju Taofeeq Esq, has called for stronger legislative oversight, transparency and accountability in the management of government agencies and public affairs in Nigeria.
He made the call during SBS FM’s Newspaper Review and Analysis programme, monitored by Ishola Halimah Bisola.
He noted that the ICPC does not oversee budgetary allocations and may therefore not be in a position to identify questionable agencies before funds are allocated to them. He consequently called on the legislature to properly review and scrutinise government agencies before approving their funding.
The legal practitioner also urged the government to be more transparent in providing information to citizens, saying this would help restore public confidence in government institutions. He cited the recent rescue of abducted residents in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, arguing that while sensitive security tactics should not be disclosed, authorities should provide the public with sufficient information about major security operations rather than leave citizens with uncertainty.
Olateju further encouraged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate actively in forthcoming elections by voting for candidates of their choice.
