Public affairs analysts, Alhaji Abdulraheem Saka and Comrade Olaitan Arije, have questioned the Federal Government’s claim that concerns over Nigeria’s rising debt profile are exaggerated, insisting that the country’s debt continues to increase through sustained borrowing.
Speaking on SBS FM’s Newspaper Review and Analysis programme monitored by reporter Abdulsamad Abdulmalik, Alhaji Saka said official records and available statistics contradict the government’s position, maintaining that Nigeria’s debt profile has continued to rise despite claims to the contrary.
Also speaking, Comrade Arije referenced comments by Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, who described concerns about the country’s debt as exaggerated. Arije, however, argued that despite the removal of fuel subsidy and the introduction of tax reforms expected to boost government revenue, Nigeria continues to accumulate debt. He urged Nigerians to use the 2027 general elections to decide the country’s future direction.
On leadership, Alhaji Saka called on Nigerians to prioritise competence, integrity and capacity when electing public office holders, stressing that only credible leaders can deliver meaningful national development.
Commenting on recent political appointments, Comrade Arije criticised the appointment of former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, as Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency board. He questioned the suitability of the appointment, alleging that it was politically motivated and aimed at strengthening the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections rather than addressing national development.
On allegations involving the Minister of Works, David Umahi, Alhaji Saka said the minister should step aside in the interest of transparency while investigations continue into allegations linked to the deaths of six professionals on a project under his supervision. He added that an independent investigation would promote public confidence and accountability.
Reacting to the death of Mary, Comrade Arije called for a thorough and transparent investigation, urging relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served and that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
