Anambra First Lady Calls for Collective Action to End Gender-Based Violence

By Fatimah Yusuf

Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has called for united action, stronger campaigns, and concrete interventions to end gender-based violence in Nigeria, saying the fight must go beyond social media slogans and symbolic advocacy.

In a statement released on Wednesday to mark the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Soludo said real change demands practical solutions and a shift in social attitudes.

She noted that the day also kicks off the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which will run until December 10—Human Rights Day.

Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, stressed that empowering women and girls through education, access to quality healthcare, employment opportunities, and stronger social institutions remains fundamental to addressing the problem.

“On Tuesday, November 25, we joined the global community in raising a voice for action on this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women,” the statement read in part.

She said meaningful progress would require collaboration among government agencies, religious institutions, civil society groups, community leaders, and families.

The First Lady added that every Nigerian has a role to play—either by speaking up, protecting victims, or challenging harmful stereotypes that perpetuate violence.
