The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its ongoing two-week warning strike following overnight deliberations by its National Executive Council (NEC), which ended around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
Announcing the decision at a press briefing in Abuja, ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, said the suspension came after “useful engagements” with government representatives and appeals from students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
“While we are not where we were before the strike began, we have seen some progress,” Piwuna said. “NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to reciprocate the efforts of well-meaning Nigerians.”
The union had embarked on the strike on October 13 over unmet demands, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement, payment of withheld salaries, revitalisation of public universities, and an end to the victimisation of lecturers at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.
ASUU is also pressing for the payment of outstanding promotion arrears, third-party deductions, and salary arrears of 25–35 percent owed to lecturers across universities.
