Bridge collapse disrupts traffic on Ilorin–Igbeti highway

Vehicular movement has been severely disrupted along the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State following the collapse of the Moro Bridge.

The bridge reportedly caved in around 5 a.m. on Thursday after a heavy-duty truck passed over it, cutting off a major transport link and leaving commuters stranded.

Motorists and residents described the incident as a significant setback, citing delays in movement, rising transport fares, and disruption to commercial activities.

“This development has negatively affected economic activities, causing delays and increasing the cost of transportation for commuters and businesses,” a trader, Kafayat, told reporters.

Reacting, the Kwara State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo, announced immediate traffic diversion in collaboration with federal authorities to ease the situation.

“The collapse occurred in the early hours of today after a heavy-duty truck passed over the bridge, resulting in a major disruption along the route,” he said in a statement.

He added that engineers had been deployed to commence palliative work on alternative routes to reduce congestion and hardship for road users.

Olododo also disclosed that construction work is ongoing on a new bridge located a few metres from the collapsed structure, expressing hope that it would provide a long-term solution.

Traffic managers have been directed to work with transport unions to ensure orderliness, while commuters were urged to remain patient and adhere to diversion guidelines.

The Moro Bridge, a colonial-era Bailey structure, has long served as a critical but fragile link between Kwara and Oyo states, connecting northern Kwara to key inter-state routes.
