Com Lanre Osho Calls for Federal Action on Maritime Safety

Human rights activist Com Lanre Osho has urged the federal government to intensify sensitization efforts on maritime safety, emphasizing the urgent need to end the use of wooden boats and enforce the wearing of life jackets.

He made this statement following the recent call by the Honourable Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Gboyega Oyetola, on the banning of wooden boats, during today’s episode of SBS Newspaper Review and Analysis.

Osho further called on the government to collaborate closely with civil society organizations to raise awareness about the dangers associated with unsafe maritime practices. According to him, partnerships between the public sector and civil society could significantly reduce accidents on Nigeria’s waterways.

“Safety on our waters is non-negotiable. The continued use of wooden boats without proper safety measures puts countless lives at risk. The federal government must step up awareness campaigns and work hand in hand with civil society to change behaviors and save lives,” Osho stressed.

The activist’s appeal comes amid growing concerns over frequent boat accidents and fatalities in various riverine communities across the country. He urged policymakers to implement regulations that enforce the use of modern vessels and mandatory life jackets for all passengers.

With Nigeria’s waterways serving as a vital means of transportation and commerce, Osho believes that proactive government action, coupled with community engagement, is critical to ensuring public safety and preventing avoidable tragedies.
