On Wednesday, EU parliamentarians called for further regulations to be applied to generative AI and requested that AI firms pay for using protected European content. Lawmakers called for complete openness on the content utilized by generative AI systems and equitable compensation for artists in a report that was approved by the legal affairs committee of the European Parliament.
Additionally, they demanded complete control over the usage of news media content for AI system training, including the ability to refuse.
Their request is made in advance of this summer’s review of EU copyright regulations. “The European Commission should ensure that the industry receives sufficient compensation for every use,” the legislators suggested. They stated that all generative AI systems on the market in the bloc should be subject to EU copyright law, regardless of where the training takes place.
