Politician and African Democratic Congress (ADC) stalwart, Dr. Oladimeji Sa’ad, has called on the Federal Government to prioritise the protection of lives and property, describing security as the foremost responsibility of any government.
Speaking on SBS FM’s Newspaper Review and Analysis programme, monitored by reporter Abdulsamad Abdulmalik, Dr. Sa’ad said Nigerians expect concrete action, not promises, in addressing the country’s security challenges. He urged the government to commit more resources to equipping the armed forces with modern weapons and ammunition to strengthen the fight against insecurity.
He also expressed concern over the prevalence of illegal mining, noting that Nigeria’s abundant natural resources could significantly boost the economy if properly harnessed. According to him, the activities of illegal miners contribute to insecurity, stressing that the government has the capacity to stop them with the necessary political will.
Dr. Sa’ad criticised what he described as poor coordination among security agencies, saying stronger inter-agency collaboration is essential to effectively tackle insecurity. He maintained that no individual should be above the law and called for offenders to be held accountable.
On the economy, he said the removal of fuel subsidy and other government policies have intensified economic hardship for many Nigerians. While acknowledging that an increase in the national minimum wage could offer some relief, he argued that lasting poverty reduction would require comprehensive economic reforms and transparent governance.
Dr. Sa’ad also decried the rising cost of elective politics, saying the high financial demands of contesting major political offices discourage credible candidates from participating in the electoral process. He urged Nigerians to elect competent leaders, hold their representatives accountable and demand good governance, while calling on public office holders to reduce the cost of governance through greater sacrifice.
Speaking on the power sector, Dr. Sa’ad lamented Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges despite its vast energy resources. He said the country has the capacity to generate reliable power through hydro, gas, coal and other energy sources, urging the government to adopt successful electricity models from other African countries and tap into the expertise of Nigerians in the diaspora.
He expressed optimism that with responsible leadership, effective governance and active citizen participation, Nigeria has the potential to overcome its challenges and achieve sustainable national development.
