Mr Salmon Babatunde Salmon, Chairman of SBS 96.9FM, Ilorin has urged the Federal Government to recognize the technical competence of Higher National Diploma (HND) holders by awarding them Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees, in a move aimed at bridging the longstanding gap between BSc and HND graduates.
Speaking in Ilorin on Friday during a media chat, Salmon said that over the years, HND graduates who undergo the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in his organization have consistently demonstrated strong practical skills and professionalism.
“I have observed firsthand that HND graduates are highly skilled and capable,” he said. Salmon emphasized that the distinction between BSc and HND should not translate into discrimination in employment or career growth.
“We need policies that value competence over certificates. HND holders deserve equal recognition for their skills and contributions to national development,” he added.
Highlighting the need for Nigeria’s educational system to align with international standards, he noted that many countries integrate technical and academic qualifications, giving graduates equal opportunities for career progression.
He called on relevant ministries, professional bodies, and policymakers to urgently review recruitment practices and implement reforms that recognize the capabilities of HND graduates, stressing that such steps would strengthen the workforce and boost economic growth.
