The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Engineer Yakubu Danladi, has called for stronger regulatory oversight and public awareness on the dangers of unregulated cosmetics, organic creams, and other harmful body products being sold across the state.
Engineer Danladi stressed that agencies such as NAFDAC and the Standards Organization of Nigeria must be fully involved in monitoring, sharing critical information, and providing feedback to ensure compliance.
The Speaker added that the dangers of unregulated cosmetics cannot be ignored, warning that they pose serious risks to the health and wellbeing of citizens.
The motion was moved by a lawmaker representing Ilorin South constituency, Hajia Yusuf Maryam Aladi, who expressed concern over the rising cases of health complications linked to the indiscriminate use of such products.
She explained that many of the creams and soaps in circulation contain dangerous chemicals such as mercury and steroids, which can cause organ damage, infertility, and even cancer.
Hajia Aladi further lamented poor enforcement of existing health and safety laws, saying many of these products are openly sold in markets, beauty shops, and online platforms without approval from NAFDAC.
Also supporting the motion, a lawmaker representing Lanwa/Ejidongari constituency, Abdulraheem Medinat Motunrayo, described the situation as a looming public health crisis.
She pointed out that social media influencers contribute to the problem by glamorizing harmful products online, misleading their followers without mentioning the dangers involved.
In her contribution, a lawmaker representing Ojomu/Balogun constituency, Sheun Ogunniyi, warned that continuous exposure to such products could overburden the state’s healthcare system in the long run.
The House Leader and lawmaker representing Ilorin Central constituency, Barrister Mogaji Oba, praised Hajia Aladi for raising a timely issue, while the Assembly unanimously adopted the motion, signaling its commitment to protecting public health across Kwara State.
