Kwara PDP, SUBEB Boss Trade Words Over Teachers’ Humiliation

By Fatimah Yusuf

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has condemned what it called the “humiliation and public disgrace” of teachers by the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Raheem Adaramaja, during an inspection visit to Government Day Secondary School, Amule, on Monday.

In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, on Tuesday night, the opposition party said it was “deeply outraged” by reports that Adaramaja allegedly ordered teachers, including the vice principal, to sweep the school premises in the presence of their students.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the SUBEB boss, said to be acting on the instruction of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, accused the teachers of maintaining an unkempt environment and directed them to pick up litter, despite their explanation that students had just returned from break.

The PDP described the incident as “a severe abuse of office and a public degradation of educational professionals,” urging the state government to tender an apology to the affected teachers and the education sector at large.

However, SUBEB Chairman, Prof. Adaramaja, dismissed the claims as false and politically motivated. He said his visit was part of routine monitoring to ensure improved hygiene and discipline in public schools.

According to him, the teachers were never humiliated, and the exercise aimed to instil a culture of cleanliness and accountability in the school system.

He said, “At no point did I order any teacher to sweep. I only emphasized the need for teachers to lead by example in maintaining a clean learning environment. Those spreading lies are playing politics with education.”

The controversy has since sparked mixed reactions across the state, with civil society groups and teachers’ unions calling for a transparent investigation into the incident.
