The Lagos State Government has commenced payment of compensation to residents of Oworonshoki in Kosofe Local Government Area whose illegal structures were recently demolished under the state’s urban renewal and regeneration programme.
The exercise, which began on Thursday, October 23, 2025, marks the fulfilment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s promise to provide relief for affected residents.
Speaking at the event held at the Oworonshoki Palace, General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), TPL/ESV Olajide Animashaun, said the compensation followed extensive verification and stakeholder engagement exercises.
He explained that the regeneration became necessary to address the proliferation of unsafe and illegal buildings erected on waterways and drainage channels, posing serious environmental risks.
“Oworonshoki is one of the communities marked for comprehensive urban renewal. While many of the affected structures were unfit for habitation, this government remains committed to fairness and inclusivity, which is why verified residents are being compensated,” Animashaun said.
He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and the Ministry of Physical Planning for ensuring transparency in the process.
According to LASURA, 79 verified beneficiaries will receive compensation in two batches — the first on Thursday and the second on Friday.
Some residents, including Mrs. Ajimoh Oyenuga and Mrs. Olaide Fatima, expressed gratitude to the government for fulfilling its promise, describing the payment as a “humane and reassuring gesture.”
The demolition exercise, officials said, aims to reclaim drainage right-of-way, improve environmental conditions, and make Oworonshoki safer and more livable.
