Media entrepreneur and EbonyLife Group CEO, Mo Abudu, has called on Nigerian and African creatives to focus on developing sustainable local streaming platforms, following reports of reduced foreign investment in African digital entertainment.
Abudu shared the message on her Instagram page on Thursday, emphasizing that “no one is coming to save us” and that Africans must take responsibility for creating platforms that serve their own market.
Her statement follows reports that Canal+ is considering shutting down Showmax as part of cost-cutting measures after acquiring MultiChoice, according to Variety.
She highlighted the early stage of indigenous streaming platforms in Nigeria and stressed the need for patience and long-term commitment to grow the industry. At EbonyLife ON Plus, she said, the company remains committed to strengthening its platform despite the challenges.
Abudu also underlined Africa’s rich cultural heritage and storytelling tradition as a foundation for building a thriving entertainment industry. She encouraged creatives to learn from global successes, adapt what works, and chart their own paths.
“I truly believe we are capable of this. The future is in our hands. Let us build it with confidence, collaboration and belief. Local for Local. Local for Global,” she said, expressing optimism that the moment represents an opportunity rather than a setback.
