The Northern Nigeria Christian Youth Association (NNCYA) has urged Christian leaders to refrain from making public comments capable of creating tension following private meetings with President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement jointly signed by its National Secretary, Bason Sunday, and National Publicity Secretary, Pastor Ruth Wada, the association said engagements between religious leaders and the President should promote peace, national unity and constructive dialogue.
The group noted that while religious leaders play an important role in promoting moral values, confidential discussions with the President should not be turned into public debates that could deepen divisions in the country.
The association expressed concern over reactions that followed the recent meeting between President Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), stressing that post-meeting comments should be measured and guided by the interest of national stability.
According to the NNCYA, access to the President is a responsibility that should be used for dialogue, counsel and intercession rather than public controversy. It also urged Nigerians not to draw conclusions without full knowledge of ongoing government efforts to address insecurity and other national challenges.
The association further maintained that no individual or organisation has a monopoly on the nation’s conscience, noting that the government also receives feedback from communities, traditional institutions, security agencies and the media.
It called on Christian leaders across all denominations to continue promoting peace, unity and prayers for those in positions of authority in line with biblical teachings.
