Tragedy struck along the Potiskum–Fika Road in Yobe State as a fatal crash claimed six lives and left eight others injured near Maiduwa Junction.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, saying the accident occurred around 3 p.m. on October 17.
According to preliminary investigations, a Sharon bus with registration number PKM 549 YZ, driven by Adamu Hassan, was travelling from Potiskum to Bajoga in Gombe State when the driver reportedly lost control, leading to the crash.
“Six passengers died on the spot, while eight others sustained various degrees of injuries. The victims were taken to the General Hospital, Fika, where a doctor confirmed the deaths,” the statement read.
The Command blamed the accident on overspeeding, reckless driving, and possible drug use by the driver.
Yobe Police Commissioner, CP Emmanuel Ado, condoled with the families of the deceased and warned drivers against dangerous road behaviour.
He also urged motorists, transport unions, and safety agencies to intensify public campaigns on safe driving, while calling on citizens to promptly report cases of reckless or impaired driving to the nearest police station.
