Terrorists have abducted students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack occurred around 2am on Friday, throwing the quiet community into panic.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, confirmed the incident, saying the number of abducted pupils was still unclear.

“The exact number of abducted pupils is yet to be confirmed as security agencies continue to assess the situation,” he said.

Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Ellema, also confirmed the attack, adding that police tactical units, military personnel and other security agencies had been deployed.

“Operatives are combing the forests with a view to rescue the abducted students,” he said.

Usman revealed that the attack occurred despite earlier intelligence warning of heightened threats across parts of Niger North Senatorial District. He said the government had issued a security directive suspending construction activities and temporarily shutting all boarding schools in the zone as a precaution.

He added that a full-scale investigation and search-and-rescue operation had commenced, with authorities maintaining close communication with security formations.

The Head of Department for Disaster and Relief in Agwara LGA, Ahmed Abdullahi Rofia, also confirmed that the number of kidnapped students and staff was still being verified.
