Three Jailed for Currency Counterfeiting in Kwara

The Federal High Court in Ilorin has sentenced three men to various jail terms for possessing counterfeit naira notes.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro, who delivered the ruling on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, found the trio — Olaitan Dina, Opeyemi Jeremiah, and Adebayo Mayowa Abiola — guilty after they pleaded to separate charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The convicts were arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and handed over to the EFCC for investigation, which revealed that several of the fake ₦1,000 notes bore identical serial numbers.

Justice Awogboro described the act as “a serious crime against the law and society,” stressing that the sentence would serve as a deterrent.

Dina was sentenced to 18 months in prison, while Jeremiah and Abiola each received 15 months — all without the option of a fine. The court also ordered that the counterfeit notes be forfeited to the Federal Government.
