President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of his letter citing pressing family considerations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, acknowledging his dedication and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Following his resignation, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

The President said Disu’s experience and leadership capacity would provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force at a time of prevailing security challenges.

In accordance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring the Police Force remains professional and accountable.

The statement was dated February 24, 2026.
