President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of efforts to improve troop welfare and strengthen the country’s security architecture.
The approval, announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel and takes effect from September 1.
Under the new salary structure, officers from the rank of Brigadier-General to General will receive a 30 per cent increase. Officers from Colonel to Warrant Officer will benefit from a 50 per cent salary increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increment.
According to the Presidency, the new package will raise the annual military wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
President Tinubu said the salary review reflects his administration’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces in tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of troops and equipping the military with modern weapons and technology to enhance operational effectiveness.
The President also urged military personnel to remain dedicated to the defence of the nation, assuring them of continued government support in the fight against insecurity.
