Two local government councils in Kwara State — Edu and Ifelodun — have separately declared a 24-hour curfew in affected communities as part of measures to curb banditry and kidnapping. The councils said the restriction, which prohibits all human and vehicular movement, is to support ongoing security clearance operations in the areas.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Abdulquadri Jimba, said the council chairman, Hon. Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, approved the imposition of a 24-hour curfew on the entire Oro-Ago District. According to the statement, the curfew took effect from 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
“The curfew is a coordinated effort to put terrorists in disarray and protect lives and property in the area. During this period, there will be no human or vehicular movement within the district in support of the ongoing security clearance operation. Further reviews will be communicated,” the statement said.
Earlier, the Edu Local Government Council also announced a 24-hour curfew on Gbugbu community, including the popular international market in the area. A statement issued on Tuesday by the Edu LGA Council Media Team and Communications Strategic Unit said the council chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Bello, approved the curfew, which became effective from 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
“The curfew is part of measures to protect lives and property as security forces continue their operations in identified areas of interest. Human and vehicular movement is prohibited during the period. Further reviews will be communicated,” the statement added.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the curfews were imposed to consolidate gains recorded by security agencies during recent operations. He said bandits operating in the affected areas were currently in disarray following sustained security onslaughts, adding that the curfew would also help security agencies identify informants aiding criminal elements.
“The curfew will help to track and apprehend criminals attempting to escape with their families and assist in identifying their informants. It is in full support of the ongoing security clearance operations,” the police commissioner said.
