The United Kingdom has announced a reduction in the post-study work period for international students, including Nigerians, from two years to 18 months, effective January 2027.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood disclosed this on Tuesday while outlining new immigration measures under the government’s Plan for Change, aimed at tightening migration rules while maintaining the UK’s appeal to top global talent.
According to a statement on the UK government’s website, the adjustment follows findings that many graduates had not transitioned into skilled employment within the two-year period.
The new policy also includes a 32% increase in the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC), a levy paid by employers hiring skilled foreign workers, to boost investment in training British workers and reduce dependence on overseas labour.
Mahmood said the reform is part of efforts to ensure that “graduates contribute effectively to the economy” and that immigration “works in the interests of the British people.”
