The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of Osun State of a free, fair and peaceful governorship election on August 15, warning that acts of violence, voter intimidation and vote buying will not be tolerated.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance on Thursday during the signing of the Osun State Peace Accord in Osogbo. He said the commission had concluded most of its preparations for the poll and was determined to ensure that the will of the electorate prevails.
Professor Amupitan said INEC would not allow fear, force or inducement to influence the outcome of the election, adding that anyone found violating the Electoral Act would face appropriate sanctions.
He disclosed that seven out of the nine scheduled electoral activities had been completed, with the close of campaigns on August 13 and the governorship election on August 15 remaining.
The INEC Chairman also revealed that more than 2.3 million registered voters are expected to participate in the election, noting that the commission has extended the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) until July 31 to enable more eligible voters to collect their cards.
He added that the commission, in collaboration with security agencies, would enforce the Electoral Act to prevent vote buying, intimidation and any attempt to disrupt the electoral process.
Meanwhile, leaders of political parties who signed the Peace Accord pledged to conduct peaceful campaigns, discourage hate speech and ensure that their supporters comply with the agreement throughout the election period.
