Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminat Ahmed El-Imam, has said the state is now one of the best places in Nigeria to give birth and raise children, citing improvements in healthcare delivery under the current administration.
Speaking during an interview with journalists, El-Imam attributed the progress to sustained reforms, strategic investments, and leadership by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
“He has converted seven years into a lifetime in the health sector in Kwara. He has transformed Kwara in many ways,” she said.
The commissioner noted that prior to the present administration, development partners such as UNICEF had withdrawn from the state due to challenges, including issues around counterpart funding.
“Today, those same agencies are back. Kwara is now counted among the best-performing states in healthcare,” she added.
According to her, the return of development partners reflects renewed confidence in the state’s health system and improved sector performance.
While acknowledging that achieving universal health coverage remains a global challenge, El-Imam maintained that Kwara has made measurable progress.
“Health is constantly evolving; it is not something that can be said to have been fully achieved. However, we have made significant progress, more than we are often given credit for,” she said.
She described the governor as a result-oriented leader who prioritises long-term outcomes over public acclaim.
“My boss is not the loud type; he believes results should speak for themselves. In the health sector, results take time because they are often intangible,” she noted.
The commissioner added that the government would continue to build on existing gains to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes for residents across the state.
