Students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, on Thursday joined the global community to celebrate the 2026 World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development with cultural displays and performances.
Dressed in various traditional attires, students representing indigenous and cultural associations across the university participated in a parade around the campus before converging at the university’s Mini Convocation Arena for the event.
The annual celebration, observed every May 21 and promoted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), highlights cultural diversity and promotes dialogue and development.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, principal officers, staff and students were entertained through traditional drama presentations, oral poetry, cultural dance performances and exhibitions of traditional foods.
Addressing participants, Professor Jimoh said the maiden edition of the celebration at KWASU reflects the institution’s multicultural identity and commitment to peaceful coexistence.
He said the university remains a place where students from different cultural backgrounds and communities can learn, interact and grow together in mutual respect.
The Vice-Chancellor also commended the Coordinator of Student Leadership and Policy Engagement, Mr Uthman Aliyu Abdulkadir, for coordinating the event.
The celebration featured performances by traditional musician Iyabo Balu, known for her “Balu” music style, Remilekun Mariam Kasali-Adelabu, popularly known as Remmychanter, and the Baalaro drummers.
