Police deny unlawful detention of minor in Kwara, clarify arrest circumstances

The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed allegations of unlawful detention of a minor in Arandun community, describing the claims as misleading.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the command said the incident stemmed from a reported case of housebreaking and theft on April 30.

According to the police, the 16-year-old girl was taken into custody for allegedly aiding her brother, a suspect identified as Timothy Aransiola, to evade arrest. The command added that she was cautioned, her statement taken, and later released to her guardian on bond in line with due process.

The clarification follows public outrage triggered by viral videos showing the minor at a police station, which some residents interpreted as unlawful detention.

The command insisted that due procedures were followed and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information, reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and upholding the rule of law.
