Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has urged Nigerian youths to turn their numerical strength into political power by participating actively in the electoral process.
Saraki made the call in a message marking this year’s International Youth Day, themed “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.”
The former Kwara State governor said young Nigerians share the same aspirations as youths elsewhere, including access to quality education, meaningful employment, security and the opportunity to build a better future.
He, however, noted that Nigeria’s socio-economic realities make it necessary for young people to play a more active role in shaping the country’s future.
Saraki said the growing number of young people registering to vote ahead of the 2027 general elections shows that Nigerian youths have not withdrawn from the political process.
According to him, more than two out of every three new voters registered ahead of the 2027 elections are between the ages of 18 and 34.
The former Senate President also recalled his role in the passage of the Not Too Young To Run Act in 2018, saying the legislation helped reduce barriers to youth participation in politics.
He urged young Nigerians who have registered to vote to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and verify their details ahead of the 2027 elections.
Saraki said youths should reject calls to stay away from the electoral process, insisting that their participation remains important in determining the future of the country.
He also encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue contributing to the development of Nigeria.
