Team Nigeria has made history with a gold medal win at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China, securing top honors in the Middle School Group Category.
The victory was announced on Sunday by the Nigeria Spelling Bee on its official Facebook page.
“Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China,” the organization wrote.
Two students from Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, also stood out on the global stage. The school confirmed that Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf both won medals at the finals.
“Ar-Raheem International College students Maryam YUSUF and Abdurrahman YUSUF won medals at Spelling Bee World Cup final in Shanghai, China 2026,” the school posted on Facebook. Maryam Yusuf was specifically noted among the medalists.
The Shanghai outing was Nigeria’s first appearance at the Spelling Bee World Cup. It has earlier reported that Team Nigeria qualified for the tournament after strong performances at both the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.
The gold award in the middle school category adds to Nigeria’s growing profile in international academic competitions and marks a milestone for the country’s debut on the world spelling stage.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee and Ar-Raheem International College have congratulated the students and coaches for representing the country with distinction in China.
