The United Arab Emirates has intercepted the majority of ballistic missiles and drones launched towards its territory in an Iranian assault, marking a major escalation in regional tensions.
In a statement on Tuesday, the UAE Ministry of Defence said air defence systems detected 137 ballistic missiles, destroying 132, while five fell into the sea. Of 209 drones detected, 195 were intercepted, and 14 landed on UAE territory, causing minor material damage. Debris from the intercepted attacks affected some civilian facilities, but authorities responded promptly to secure impacted areas and ensure public safety.
The government condemned the attacks as a violation of national sovereignty and international law, warning that such actions threaten civilian lives and regional stability. UAE officials reaffirmed their commitment to defend the country and protect citizens and residents, keeping the nation on high alert.
The attacks follow the US-Israeli air campaign on Iran over the weekend that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior officials. Iran has since launched retaliatory strikes on US allies in the region.
Earlier, Iran targeted the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, causing a small fire and minor damage. No casualties were reported, as air defence systems intercepted four drones aimed at the diplomatic quarter.
The UAE Ministry of Defence urged the public to rely on official information and avoid spreading unverified reports.
