A political analyst, Comrade Aleshinloye Olayiwola Ridwan, has warned that the lingering crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State could weaken the party’s electoral prospects if urgent reconciliation efforts are not undertaken.
Speaking during SBS FM’s Newspaper Review programme on Monday, Aleshinloye said the controversy surrounding the emergence of Engr. Yakubu Salihu Danladi as the party’s candidate had generated widespread grievances, particularly among members and supporters in Ilorin.
According to him, many aggrieved party members believe the APC leadership has failed to address concerns arising from the outcome of the primary election.
He said the internal crisis has created an opportunity for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that some APC supporters have indicated they would continue to support President Bola Tinubu while withholding support for other APC candidates in the state.
Commenting on the PDP’s strategy, Aleshinloye said the party’s decision to adopt a consensus approach in selecting Suleiman Kale Kawu as its candidate had helped unite members and boost the candidate’s popularity across Kwara Central.
He said the APC could only overcome the challenge by resolving its internal disputes and addressing issues relating to zoning, inclusiveness and party unity.
Speaking on political participation, Aleshinloye advocated the emergence of competent leaders regardless of age and criticised the high cost of contesting elective offices, particularly legislative seats.
He argued that the financial burden discourages capable young Nigerians from seeking public office and called for constitutional reforms that would promote merit, reduce the influence of money in politics and encourage greater youth participation in the country’s democratic process.
