Football fans across the world are turning their attention to London, United Kingdom, where the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual award, is expected to be announced tonight, Monday, October 26.
The 70th edition of the award ceremony will take place at the London Palladium, marking the first time the event is being held outside Paris. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. British time, corresponding to 9 p.m. Nigerian time, with sports presenter Kate Scott and former France international Thierry Henry serving as hosts.
England captain and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane enters the ceremony as one of the leading contenders following an outstanding season in which he scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for the German club. His impressive scoring record has strengthened his chances of winning the award for the first time in his career.
However, Kane faces competition from Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé, who are also among the leading contenders for the honour. Other notable nominees include Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and defending champion Ousmane Dembélé.
The ceremony is particularly significant as the Ballon d’Or marks its 70th anniversary this year. The decision to host the event in London also pays tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the English football legend who won the inaugural award in 1956.
Meanwhile, Nigerian football fans will be watching closely as Senegalese forward Sadio Mané features on this year’s men’s shortlist. Nigerian stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, however, are absent from the 30-man list of nominees for the men’s award.
Beyond the men’s main award, the ceremony will recognise outstanding achievements in women’s football, goalkeeping, coaching, young talent and club performance, among other categories.
As anticipation builds ahead of the announcement, the contest between Kane, Yamal and Mbappé remains one of the major talking points, with football supporters waiting to see who will be crowned the world’s best player for the 2025–2026 season.
