The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the 1448 Islamic New Year (Hijrah).
The declaration follows the designation of Tuesday as the first day of Muharram 1448 AH, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
In a statement issued on Monday, the government urged Muslims to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah and its enduring
lessons for humanity.

The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the 1448 Islamic New Year (Hijrah).
The declaration follows the designation of Tuesday as the first day of Muharram 1448 AH, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
In a statement issued on Monday, the government urged Muslims to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah and its enduring lessons for humanity.
According to the statement, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) serves as a reminder of the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, common humanity, and the right of individuals to pursue their legitimate aspirations without harming others.
“Hijrah reminds the world of the evergreen value of tolerance, common humanity, and the right of every person to their legitimate aspirations — either in matters of faith or mundane matters as long as they do not hurt others,” the statement said.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq congratulated Muslims on the commencement of the new Islamic year and prayed for peace, unity and prosperity in the state and the country.
“As we commemorate the new Hijrah Year, His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, prays that God bless every home, restore peace to our land, and give us the strength to do right by every person,” the statement added.
The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, on behalf of the Kwara State Government.
