The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed reports of a suspected bandit attack in Oke-Oyi and neighbouring communities, describing the information as false and misleading.
The Command said it received a distress call at about 9:15 a.m. following panic and confusion around Government Girls Secondary School, Oke-Oyi, over claims that bandits had invaded the school premises.
According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, ANIPR, on Thursday, the Divisional Police Officer of Oke-Oyi Division immediately deployed officers to the area to assess the situation and ensure the safety of students, teachers, and residents.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the panic was triggered by a woman who reportedly entered the school premises claiming that bandits had arrived in the community.
The Police said the unverified claim caused fear among students and staff, leading to a temporary disruption of academic activities.
However, after assessing the situation, the Command confirmed that there was no bandit attack, no sighting of armed criminals, and no security breach in Oke-Oyi or any part of Kwara State.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, condemned the spread of false security information, warning that such reports could create unnecessary panic and undermine public confidence.
The Police Command said efforts have commenced to identify the person responsible for the false alarm, adding that the individual will be questioned and may face legal action for spreading information capable of causing public disorder.
Residents have been advised to remain calm and vigilant while avoiding the spread of unverified information. The Command urged members of the public to confirm security-related reports through official channels and promptly report any suspicious activities.
The Kwara State Police Command assured residents that security measures remain in place to protect lives and property across the state.
