Saliu Mustapha Dumps APC, Picks PDP Ticket for Kwara Central

Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and subsequently emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for the senatorial district ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mustapha said his decision followed weeks of consultations with stakeholders, supporters and constituents across Kwara Central and the state. He explained that his move was guided by the need to remain faithful to his principles and the aspirations of the people he represents, stressing that politics must be anchored on people, principles and a clear sense of purpose.

The senator expressed appreciation to the APC leadership, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the opportunities and relationships he enjoyed while in the party. He, however, assured his constituents that his change of political platform would not affect his commitment to their welfare and the development of Kwara State and Nigeria.

The development follows growing political tension within the Kwara APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Reports had earlier indicated that Mustapha was considering defection after losing the party’s governorship primary, failing to secure the APC’s Kwara Central senatorial ticket and amid disagreements within the party.

His defection had also generated speculation within the PDP, with party stakeholders reportedly considering him for the Kwara Central senatorial ticket. The latest development has now altered the political calculations, as Mustapha is set to contest under the PDP against Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who is expected to fly the APC flag for the Kwara Central senatorial district.

The contest is expected to be closely watched, given Mustapha’s political experience and his position as the incumbent senator representing Kwara Central. It could also have wider implications for the balance of political influence in Kwara State ahead of the 2027 governorship and legislative elections.

Mustapha, while announcing his new political direction, said his political platform might have changed, but his principles, purpose and commitment to the people remain unchanged.
